On the study of corrosion activity of drilling muds

For drilling tools and equipment protection from corrosion, the research surveys were carried out on the study of corrosion activity of drilling muds. Alongside with the study of properties of drilling muds in the laboratory conditions, their corrosion activity was also researched. Corrosion aggression of various drilling muds were studied, the rate and type of associating corrosion identified, the masses of metal that directly contacts with the drilling mud during certain period calculated, the effect of temperature factor and concentration of applied additives on the corrosion activity of drilling muds researched. Based on obtained results of studying corrosion activity of drilling muds, it was justified that the fresh and mineralized drilling muds are the corrosion active mediums. While composing process operator guide on drilling muds and developing new formulations, it is recommended to take into consideration the sources of corroding substances and obligatory include in their composition corrosion inhibitors. In the case of intensive corrosion of equipment, tools and decomposition of polymeric agents of drilling muds from the influence of microorganisms, it is necessary to treat the drilling mud with bactericide agent and maintain pH value of drilling mud in alkaline area of no more than 9.0.
