Miocene-Oligocene sediments of South-East Caucasus with total capacity of 25 thousand km3are characterized with regional oil and gas saturation. Alongside with Siyazan monocline zone, oil and gas inflows have been obtained in more than 20 areas of Absheron peninsula and South-East Gobustan, numerous surface and well occurrences marked as well. However, despite of obtained positive results, except for Garadagh, Binagadi-Masazyr, Umbaki, Shargi Ajiveli and other areas, none of revealed deposits have been contoured and brought into production. The reasons for this incompatibility, apart from organizational problems are complications of geological structure of these high-clay reservoirs, which are identified now with the bazhenov sediments of West Siberia. The paper reviews the key issues of searching and exploration of hydrocarbons in Miocene-Oligocene sediments of Absheron peninsula, South-East Gobustan and adjacent offshore areas, as well as the ways of their solution.
