While processing Baku naphthenic base petroleum, oils with a low and medium viscosity index are obtained, which have good detergent properties and a low pour point and high stability as well. To increase the viscosity and viscosity index of base oils, effective thickening additives and highly viscous, high-index components were used. When adding 1–1.5 % Viscoplex 2-670 additive or 8% Shelvis-50 additive to the base oil, the viscosity index increases up to to 94 units, while pour point and other parameters deteriorate. The addition of viscous additives proved to be more effective than the addition of high-index components. Thus, it has been shown that it is quite possible to obtain an oil base from Baku oils with a low and medium viscosity index, by all parameters meeting the standards for base oils, with a saturated hydrocarbon content of 91–92%. Adding high-index components or viscous additives can bring the viscosity index of oils to a high level (>90).
