The perspectives and formation of non-structural traps in Lower Kur depression

Lower Kur depression is a known oil-gas generation basin, which is characterized with positive stratigraphic, lithologic-facies and structural-tectonic criteria of oil-gas bearing content. However, it is necessary to perform additional estimation of the perspectives of oil-gas bearing content of the south-west wing of the depression, based on the tectonic criteria, seismological parameters and the presence of reservoir rocks, hoods and traps in the geological section. According to the results of the detailed investigation of Kurovdagh-Neftchala belt via the geophysical methods, it was defined that the developed lithologically limited and stratigraphic traps in Sarkhanbeyli, Orta Mughan, Shargi Shorsulu and Babazanan areas have all signs of oil-gas bearing perspectives. These traps are located in not more than 4.5 km depth among the benches of Mesozoic paleorelief and Pliocene sediments covering them. Specifically the nonconformities occurring between these layers could play a significant role in the migration and accumulation of the hydrocarbons. It should be noted that the initial reservoirs formed in the process of deposition make the traps on the surface of nonconformities related to the sedimentation-stratigraphic type, which lie down to the surface of nonconformity. The studies have revealed similar traps in the deeper thinning horizons, which may be considered perspective in the presence of the reservoirs, reservoir rocks and oil generating formations as well.
