Subterranean fresh, thermal and mineral waters of the Karabakh economic region
S.S. Salakhov Cand. in Geol.-Min.Sc. - National Geological Survey Service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural ResourcesThe scientific article provides detailed information about the underground freshwater and thermal-mineral waters of the Karabakh economic Region. The region possesses underground water reserves with high potential, which remained under occupation for more than 30 years. Depending on the area and depth, underground waters exhibit various hydrodynamic and hydrochemical characteristics. These waters, characterized by high discharge and temperature, represent a great potential for meeting the needs of the resettling population. These waters are suitable for drinking, irrigation, and technical purposes.
Thermal waters with high temperatures (above 60 °C) are also considered an alternative energy source. The efficient use of the thermal energy of these waters in residential buildings, households, and other essential areas aligns with the State Program. Through circulation, it is possible to save fuel by using the energy extracted from thermal waters. This is also environmentally advantageous.
In terms of chemical composition, thermal and mineral waters are bicarbonate and calcium-rich. The main component in their gas content is carbon dioxide. The gas lift (the potential pressure of carbon dioxide), which constitutes more than half of the discharge, is the main gravitational factor influencing the migration of thermal waters to the earth’s surface.
These waters also possess therapeutic significance. Their role is invaluable in the treatment of diseases of the stomach, intestines, heart, cardiovascular system, rheumatism, spine, nervous system, etc. With a doctor’s recommendation, treatment can be obtained by both internal use and therapeutic bathing. Therefore, the time has come to construct large sanatorium complexes with modern infrastructure for public use.
At present, reconstruction efforts are being carried out by our government in this field. There are plenty of areas of balneological (resort) importance in the Karabakh Economic Region.
Shusha, Lachin, Gubadli and other areas are also rich in freshwater resources. It is essential to continuously study and monitor such unique water resources.
