The analysis of the geotectonic development of the Western Absheron shows that the most favourable conditions for the formation of hydrocarbons were in the central parts of the Baku and Guzdek troughs, which were intensive sedimentation zones in both the Oligocene-Miocene and the Pliocene-Paleogene periods, together with the South Caspian depression.
The article discusses the study of the hydrocarbon potential and prospects of the Lower Pliocene-Miocene sediments based on a complex analysis of the geological and geophysical studies carried out in recent years in the Lokbatan, Puta-Gushkhana, Lokbatan-deniz and Korgoz-Giziltepe areas, located in the south-east of Western Absheron and its neighbouring areas.
The results of the analysis are as follows: the stratigraphic age and lithological composition of the sediments distributed in the Lokbatan, Puta-Gushkhana, Korgoz-Giziltepe areas of Western Absheron were determined based on the joint analysis of well and seismic material; the formation of hydrocarbons mainly in the area of the Guzdek trough in the north and the South Caspian Depression in the south was confirmed and specified by actual geological and geophysical materials; it was found that the hydrocarbons produced in the central parts of the depression migrated laterally to its sides through porous sediments; it was predicted that hydrocarbons would accumulate mainly in the arches of anticlinal structures, in areas where their sediments were wedged.
Based on the analyses conducted, we believe that the Miocene sediments in the northern wing of the Puta-Gushkhana and Korgoz structures are oil-rich, and the Miocene sediments in the north-eastern wing of the Shongar and Sarinca-Gulbakht structures are gas-rich.
