Operational experience from oilfields and analysis of hydrocarbon gathering and transportation processes indicate that the majority of problems arising in well–gathering systems are directly associated with the multicomponent nature of crude oils, their rheological properties, and their blending behavior. Crude oils, including water-cut varieties, are natural oil mixtures of nanostructured nature—polydisperse systems containing paraffins and asphaltenes. Studies have shown that blending such oils leads to problematic mixtures accompanied by various technological challenges. These include anomalous changes in key technological parameters, sediment formation, and blockage development. Hence, such oil blends are commonly described as exhibiting “incompatibility.”
This paper analyzes the effect of temperature on the incompatibility of crude oil blending. Furthermore, the influence of the blending process on technological operations during oil gathering, transportation, and storage is examined, and potential methods for preventing the associated problems are discussed.
