Induced seismicity near the “Takhta-Korpu” reservoir
G.J. Yetirmishli Dr. in Geol.-Min. Sc - Republican Seismic Survey Center of Azerbaijan National Academy of SciencesThe changes in seismicity, the concentration of weak earthquakes and even relatively strong earthquakes are possible over time in the “Takhta-Korpu” reservoir located in Gusar-Shabran region, one of the seismically active areas of Azerbaijan and adjacent areas. Events such as increased seismicity and the occurrence of relatively strong earthquakes in this background allow us to say that in some cases the concentration of seismic shocks increases very sharply when the large reservoirs built in seismically active areas are filled with large amounts of water. Taking this into account, to study the characteristics of seismic changes around the reservoir, the weak seismicity of the area, geodynamic conditions and the effect of reservoir filling on the seismicity of the area have been studied on the basis of data of digital seismic stations operating permanently in the north-eastern part of the republic. From the analysis of the dependency graph of the number of earthquakes with changes in the water level in the “Takhta-Korpu” reservoir, it can be concluded that periodic changes were observed in 2014–2021 years. In 2016–2017, a period is observed during 2 years and in those years the water level reaches its maximum level (182 m). When the water level goes down to 160-166 m, the number of earthquakes increases.
