The article considers that at a certain stage of oil field development, different types of water (including injected water and external water influx from upper formations) enter high-permeability zones and reach production wells, resulting in an increase in water content in the produced fluids. In this regard, isolating the water entering the well is a key and necessary challenge in order to increase or maintain oil production rates. To address this problem, a silicate gel-based composition was selected as the base material, which can easily penetrate water-saturated deep zones of the reservoir, effectively block water-conducting channels, and does not alter the phase permeability with respect to oil. The displacement of oil by water in a specific heterogeneous two-layer reservoir, both in the presence and absence of interlayer crossflow, as well as the process of isolating water entering the production well from the high-permeability zone of the reservoir using a gel-based composition around injection and production wells, was investigated by regulating the process according to a certain order of water cut increase during waterflooding. The study was carried out based on two-phase (water–oil) and three-component (water–oil–isolation agent) computational models during reservoir development. A comparison of the current oil recovery factor was performed between cases with and without interlayer crossflow, depending on the increase in water cut, and compared with conventional waterflooding results. Based on this, the efficiency of regulating the water shut-off process was evaluated. In addition, the plugging (washing-out) time of the isolating composition from the high-permeability zone was predicted for both cases-with and without interlayer crossflow.
